Great Expectations

Is this fun, or what? The Suns’ habit of coming from way ahead to win at the buzzer, that is.

No, I’m serious!

I REALLY want to know if this is fun, or what?

Turning It Over

The Suns were far too careless and way too honest, which in the end is why they couldn’t beat the Heat.

To translate those shortcomings into numbers, they had 17 turnovers leading to 23 points, and where out-stolen 10 to zero. They were especially sloppy in the second period when they turned it over 9 times in the process of seeing a 13-point lead into a 6-point halftime deficit.

Oh, Those '00s

With the dawn of an exciting new decade filled with possibilities, I thought it only natural to do what scores of journalists, bloggers, stat-heads and nerds have done before me: Look back.

For the Suns, the ‘OOs were a tenth of a century on the brink, ten years of coming oh-so-close, only for players and fans alike to wind up slapping their foreheads and moaning, “Ooooooooohhhh!” It started with the team running and gunning, and it ended the same way, but in the middle, there were ups and downs galore. Suns Working to Get Back to Greatness

<Barry Gossage/NBAE/Getty Images)

This is more like it.

That’s all I could think after watching the Suns dispatch of the Houston Rockets at home, one night after doing the same to the Sacramento Kings on the road.

This is Suns basketball, and these are the Suns we know and love.

Now, before we get ahead of ourselves, understand that things can’t be this good all the time. As I wrote at the beginning of the season, there will be peaks, there will be valleys, and then there will be more of both. [Read more...]

Suns Overcome Spunky Rockets

Two things we’ve always known for sure about these Suns. Number one, big deficits mean nothing to them. Number two, neither do big leads.

Thus it really was no surprise that at one point in the first period last night they were up 16, and at one point in the second period they were down 16. It also didn’t raise so much as a single eyebrow when their superior firepower, aided and abetted by a late boost from the bench, enabled them to finally put away Houston’s undermanned but overachieving Rockets 118-110.

The Rockets may not have many names, but they are not short on spunk, nor are they as deficient in skills as their anonymity would lead you to misbelieve. When Yao Ming went down and Tracy McGrady followed the Rockets were consigned to the lottery heap, but they rolled into town last night five games over .500. [Read more...]

Day in the Life of a GM: Philosophy Towards the Job

Kerr says that his playing days help him keep an even keel as a GM.
(Scott Cunningham/NBAE/Getty Images)

Since the advent of fantasy basketball, everybody believes that they can be a GM. Most fans have visions of a man maniacally working deals on the phone and using a staff of MIT grads to crack stats. So in order to dispel all (most) the myths, Suns President of Basketball Operations and GM Steve Kerr told what his days are like. [Read more...]

Grizzlies Run Past Suns

(Barry Gossage/NBAE/Getty Images)

(Barry Gossage/NBAE/Getty Images)

This is the kind of game that needs no explanation, which is a good thing because there really isn’t one.

Suffice it to say that in football parlance Memphis won the toss and elected to receive and the Suns chose to defend neither goal. Or, if you insist on hoop speak, the Suns played All-Star defense, and if you’ve ever seen an NBA All-Star Game you know this is not a compliment.

And don’t let that 128-103 final score fool you. The game wasn’t nearly that competitive. The Grizzlies basically did whatever they wanted to do whenever they wanted to do it pretty much from the opening tip all the way to garbage time (which was roughly the last 25 minutes). [Read more...]
