Suns Working to Get Back to Greatness

This is more like it.

That’s all I could think after watching the Suns dispatch of the Houston Rockets at home, one night after doing the same to the Sacramento Kings on the road.

This is Suns basketball, and these are the Suns we know and love.

Now, before we get ahead of ourselves, understand that things can’t be this good all the time. As I wrote at the beginning of the season, there will be peaks, there will be valleys, and then there will be more of both. [Read more...]

I’m thankful I get to watch Amar’e Stoudemire play basketball.

I’m thankful Steve Nash is having as fabulous of a season as he did in either of his back-to-back MVP seasons. And yes, he’s 35.

I’m thankful the Suns have returned to their up-tempo style, originally instituted by former coach Mike D’Antoni and seemingly being shifted into an even higher gear by Alvin Gentry.

I’m thankful Gentry is the coach of the Suns, that the Suns are led by an intelligent man who not only understands the Xs and Os of basketball, but how to manage professional athletes. I’m thankful that the players appear to thoroughly enjoy playing for their coach. [Read more...]

Fast Start and Early Season Surprises

Even when the Suns aren’t great, they have still been pretty good. That’s something the Suns and their fans can say for certain after this feel-good of a 9-2 start.

Take Sunday’s 101-100 victory over visiting Toronto. The Suns looked flat in shooting just less than 45 percent from the field (and they only reason their percentage was that good was because Amar’e Stoudemire was 10-of-15). They were a little stagnant on offense — at least, they were compared to what we’ve grown accustomed to. Their defense was so-so.

Yet they won. They displayed a winning mentality. They overcame some adversity and showed that, hey, we’re not just gonna go away. [Read more...]

A Coach Without a Team

Eric Musselman is entering his third season without a job in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean he is no longer a coach.

In fact, Musselman has spent the past two years meticulously studying every NBA team. That includes the Suns.

And he’s one man who is not surprised that the Suns looked good — and were victorious — in their season-opener against Clippers. [Read more...]

Steve Kerr is entering his third year as general manager of the Suns, who are looking to make a return to the playoffs with some old faces and new acquisitions. Kerr took some time to address the roster with What are your overall impressions of the team heading into the season?

Steve Kerr: I’m excited about our team. They’ve worked hard, they’re playing together and they’ve formed a great chemistry. We have a lot of good young players who are in the process of developing, which is exciting. [Read more...]
