After two and a half seasons as a backup in Phoenix and another half season as a backup in Houston, the limelight is beginning to shine on Goran Dragic.
The opportunity given to Dragic after re-signing with the Phoenix Suns this offseason and his performance while starting at point guard for the Houston Rockets, has allowed for his name to be mentioned with more frequency going into the 2012-13 season.
The national media is catching on to what could be set up as a perfect pairing between the Suns and and the Slovenian point guard.
Take for example, the question posed by Sekou Smith’s piece in the Hang Time Blog on NBA.com, titled Is This The Year Of The Dragic?”
Better yet, hear out Smith’s answer to that question, as he explains why Dragic will be one of Five Guys to Watch in 2012-13.
The writer believes that the Suns guard will have plenty of opportunity in the next season and beyond to show that the “flashes of greatness we’ve seen from him in the past are more than just momentary bursts of greatness.”
Another thing that bodes well is that Dragic is being handed the keys to a car he’s already familiar with, in Alvin Gentry’s offense.
Thus, the upcoming season will be less of a transition for him in that sense, but he will be using informal workouts, training camp and the preseason to build a familiarity and chemistry with new teammates such as forward Michael Beasley.
Joining Dragic on this particular list from the Hang Time blog were MarShon Brooks of the Brooklyn Nets, Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets, Derrick Favors of the Utah Jazz and Brandon Knight of the Detroit Pistons.
