Close your eyes and imagine you’re sitting in the US Airways Center this fall. No, not for the Beyonce concert. For the Suns’ home opener. It’s eight minutes before tip-off and the lights have just gone out like it is a Super Bowl in New Orleans. The big screen clicks on and you hear the refrain of Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive” begin to play as your Suns are introduced.

Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I’m radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I’m radioactive, radioactive

So maybe it is not the song fans will hear from the Suns’ game operations when they unveil their new introduction video, but it easily could be. Maybe if I buy them lunch it will be.

The team is certainly entering a new age for the franchise with new logos, new uniforms, a new general manager, a new coach, a completely revamped roster and a rookie who wasn’t even born when the then-named America West Arena opened its doors in 1992. And don’t think the irony of the song being about a post apocalyptic world is lost on me either. That too is appropriate seeing as the team itself is rising from the ashes of what many fans treated as an apocalyptic season. (Obviously, it wasn’t. We’re all still here and the team is stronger than before in talent and assets.)

Will this new world bring more wins? If you know the answer to that, I’ll have to crown you the second coming of the Carnac the Magnificent or get you to join Miss Cleo’s staff as soon as possible. Short of that, none of us actually know.

What is clear is this season’s roster is being built like an Expendibles sequel, with entertainment and action in mind. With the additions of Eric Bledsoe and Gerald Green, Jeff Hornacek’s high-speed offense has two swingmen with more frequent flyer miles than George Clooney in Up in the Air thanks to the NBA Dunk Contest. Not good enough? No. 5 overall pick Alex Len once made a cartwheel dunk — putting his former gymnastics skills to work — and fellow first rounder Archie Goodwin has more hops than a beer factory. From last year’s roster, Shannon Brown will be bringing his own rim-rocking leaping ability, Markieff Morris will return with his Blake Griffin embarassing potential and even P.J. Tucker, who once won a dunk contest overseas, has above-the-rim potential. That’s before we even bring up Arinze Onuaku who may get a training camp invite after an impressive stint in Vegas for the Summer Suns. He once broke a backboard with one of his dunks at Syracuse.

What does all of this mean? Well, the Suns’ pregame warmup lines just got immensely more interesting. That, and the team has the potential to make more posters than the Costacos brothers did in the ’80s.

These Suns of Anarchy are ready to wreak havoc on opposing defenses like a glass of milk on a lactose intolerant person’s digestive system. They are the kind of players that will thrive in an offense predicated on speed and athleticism. They are the type to give opposing defenses nightmares about winding up on the receiving end of a SportsCenter Top 10 highlight and cause fans exhaustion from being on the edge of their seat in anticipation.

Welcome to the new age of Suns basketball. Just imagine what the Dragon can do with these guys. It may not lead to more wins, but at least it will be interesting to watch.
